How to Make Your First Sale on Amazon
Getting your first sale on Amazon is the hardest part, but getting your first 10 sales is where the momentum really begins. In this blog, I'm going to walk you through how to do both.
If you'd rather watch, this post is based on my video Your First 10 Sales on Amazon Handmade. It walks through exactly what I'd do if I had to start my shop from scratch today.
Why Your First Sale Feels So Hard
When you're brand new, you have no reviews, no sales history, and no idea if anyone is even seeing your listings. It's easy to assume something is wrong with your products, when really, Amazon just doesn't know much about you yet.
That's why the goal isn't just one sale. The goal is your first 10. Those early sales tell Amazon that shoppers want what you're making, and that's when things start to build on each other.
How to Make Your First Sale on Amazon
Step 1: Start with 1–3 Strong Listings
You don't need a full shop to make your first sale. In fact, trying to list everything at once usually means none of your listings get the attention they need.
Instead, pick one to three products you're most confident in and make those listings as strong as they can be. Once they're working, you can use what you learned to build out the rest of your shop.
Step 2: Fix Your Photos First
Your main photo is the first thing a shopper sees in search, and it decides whether they click or keep scrolling. If you only have time to improve one thing, start here.
Make sure your main image follows Amazon's requirements and shows your product clearly. Then use your other image slots to show size, detail, and your product in use, so shoppers can picture it in their own home.
Step 3: Write Titles That Actually Get Found
A cute product name might feel on brand, but shoppers aren't searching for it. Your title needs to describe what your product is, using the words a shopper would actually type into the search bar.
Lead with what the product is, then add the details that matter most, like material, size, color, or who it's for.
Step 4: Use Bullet Points to Convert
Once a shopper clicks, your bullet points do the selling. Use them to answer the questions shoppers would ask you in person: What's it made of? How big is it? Can it be personalized? Does it make a good gift?
Keep each bullet easy to scan, and lead with the benefit to the shopper.
Step 5: Add the Right Keywords
Your backend search terms give Amazon extra words to match your product to shoppers' searches. Use this space for relevant words and phrases that aren't already in your title, like other names for your product or the occasions it's perfect for.
Skip the repeats and anything that doesn't truly describe your product. Relevant beats long every time.
Step 6: Set Realistic Pricing and Shipping
Shoppers compare. If your price or shipping costs are way out of line with similar products, they'll click away, even if they love your item.
Look at what similar handmade products are selling for, and make sure your shipping time and cost feel reasonable. Just make sure your price still covers your materials, time, and Amazon fees, so every sale is actually worth it.
How to Get to Your First 10 Sales
Step 7: Don't Overcomplicate Your Shop
It's tempting to jump into ads, deals, and every new feature Amazon offers. But when you're just starting out, more moving parts usually means more confusion, not more sales.
Keep it simple. A few strong listings with great photos, clear titles, and the right keywords will do more for you than a complicated setup you can't keep up with.
Step 8: Give Your Listings Time to Work
This is the hardest step, because it means waiting. Amazon needs time to learn where your products fit and who to show them to.
If you change your listings every few days, you never get a clear picture of what's working. Make your improvements, then give them time before you decide what to change next.
Step 9: Focus on Momentum, Not Perfection
Your listings don't have to be perfect to sell. Every sale builds on the last one, and every small improvement adds up.
Celebrate that first sale, then keep going. Make one improvement at a time, keep showing up, and let those first 10 sales build the momentum your shop needs to grow.
Once you're ready for the next step, my post on how to get more sales on Amazon Handmade walks through more ways to help shoppers find your products.
