What is Amazon Handmade? 5 Reasons to Get Your Shop Started Today

“When I say this has revolutionized my business, I’m not joking.”- Amy Lineberry

If you are a creative seller already showing up on Etsy and other marketplaces, you may have heard others talking about their work being sold on Amazon and wondered how you could do the same. I made the switch from Etsy to Amazon a few years ago, and it changed my business, so today I am here to answer the question: What is Amazon Handmade?

Let us break down five reasons why you should consider getting your handmade shop set up on Amazon—and how it can change everything for your business.

1. Amazon’s Massive Customer Base

This is the game changer right out of the gate. Amazon has over 300 million buyer accounts, with more than 200 million of them being Prime members. That is a lot of potential customers.

Even though the number of Amazon Handmade sellers is significantly smaller than those on Etsy, you still get access to the full Amazon marketplace. Your products will appear in the same search results as any other item on Amazon, with all the same powerful search and filter tools customers love.

And let’s be honest: most of us have made one-click buys on Amazon more times than we care to admit. Your handmade products could be that next quick purchase.

2. Logistics and Shipping That Work for You

Amazon’s global reach is unmatched. They are constantly expanding their capabilities—whether that is through Amazon Prime or new services like Amazon Shipping, which allows sellers who fulfill their own orders to schedule pickups directly from their location. That means you may not have to run to the post office every day to drop off packages anymore. Amazon comes to you.

This service is especially helpful if you sell bulkier items or just want to streamline your fulfillment process.

And of course, once you are set up with Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), Amazon handles the storage, shipping, and customer service for you. For handmade sellers who want to scale without sacrificing their time and energy, this can be a total game changer.

3. More Control Over Advertising and Promotions

Let’s talk ads.

If you have ever run ads on Etsy, you know the limitations. You get a daily budget and not much else. With Amazon, it is a whole new level.

Amazon offers robust advertising tools like:

  • Sponsored Products

  • Sponsored Brands

  • Coupons

  • Lightning Deals

  • Prime Exclusive Discounts

You can adjust your ad spend on a per-keyword basis, control your daily budget, and test new keywords to see what works—all while watching the data roll in. It is more sophisticated, and honestly, more effective than what many handmade sellers are used to.

4. A Professional Storefront with Maker Profile

When you set up your shop on Etsy, it looks a lot like everyone else’s. You get a banner, a list of items, and some basic shop sections. That is, it.

Amazon Handmade offers a more customizable experience. You will still need a registered trademark to access the full Brand Registry features, but even without it, you get a Maker Profile—a dedicated space to tell your story, share your photo, and connect with customers.

Once you are Brand Registered (after you have obtained a trademark), Amazon unlocks additional features like:

  • A fully customizable storefront

  • A+ content with detailed images and storytelling

  • Brand referral bonuses when you bring customers to your shop

But even without a trademark, your Maker Profile gives you a leg up compared to what is available on other platforms. It is a chance to build trust, highlight your craftsmanship, and give your shop a personal touch.

5. Prime Shipping = Loyal Customers

This is the one that made the biggest difference for my business.

When you use Fulfilled by Amazon, your products become eligible for Prime shipping—meaning they can get to customers within 1–2 days (or sometimes even same-day). Customers trust Prime. They are more likely to buy if they know it will arrive quickly and reliably.

Using FBA also helped me scale because I could batch-produce my products and send them in bulk to Amazon’s warehouses. That meant I was not stuck printing labels and packaging orders every single day. I could spend my time growing my business.

In fact, after switching to FBA, my revenue jumped from $50,000 in 2022 to over $75,000 in 2023—all while working fewer hours per week.
